THIS SITE HAS BEEN CREATED AND IS MANAGED BY THE PUBLIC ADVISORY GROUP TO THE KINGS RIVER FISHERIES MANAGEMENT PROGRAM (KRFMP).

*******************************

 SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

   None as of now

*****************************************************

The program is a combined effort, to include funding, on the parts of the Kings River Conservation District (KRCD), the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) and the Kings river Water Association (KRWA). The Public Advisory Group is the mechanism for public input to the Kings River Fisheries Management Program.  Go to "History"  for a very short overview of the genesis of the program.

The KRFMP has a number of documents describing what has been accomplished in prior years, what is planned for the upcoming year and what is the over arching philosophy for the restoration efforts.  These documents are the annual technical Reports (2002-2003, 2003-2004,  2004-2005 and 2005-2006), the Five Year Implementation Plan for 2007-2008, the Fisheries Habitat Master Plan for 2004-2010 and The Water Quality Monitoring Report for 2005-2006.   In addition, there is a report on the condition of Rainbow trout  in the Lower Kings River.  All of these documents are located on the KRCD web site.

In the "Maps & Docs" area are two documents of interest.  The first one is the complaint filed with the SWRCB regarding the flows in the lower Kings River, particularly below the Fresno Weir.  Many persons feel that this complaint was the catalyst for the establishment of the program.  The second document is the Framework Agreement which established the Kings River Fisheries Management Program.   The map shows the boundaries of the Catch and Release stretch and the two stretches where there is no fishing.

The Gallery has pictures of the latest projects such as  trout location tracking via radio, boulder placement, and spawning channel development.

The Forums area is available for posing questions, posting comments and responding to existing posts.  The only caveat is that in order to post an item, you must be a registered user.  We do not publish the addresses of our registered users.

UPCOMING PROJECTS
In the current water year the following activities are being proposed:

Activities scheduled during high water flow period:

     None scheduled

Activities scheduled during the low water flow period:

In February, 2009 the streamside incubators will be charged with approximately 150,000 "triploid" trout eggs.  These eggs will yield fish that cannot reproduce and are identifiable via a blood test. The triploids will provide a means of estimnating the amount of contribution from the incubators to the trout population in the Kings River below Pine Flat Dam.

Activities carried out during the low flow period:

In November 2008, the second annual Calibrated Fisherman Survey was completed.  A total of 12 rainbow trout were landed during the survey, 4 of which were determined to be "wild".  The annual KRCD electrofishing survey was also completed in November.  Six sites were sampled  and a total of 2,758 fish were collected, identified, weighed measured and released.

In December 2008, the streamside incubators were charged with approximately 150,000 rainbow trout eggs.  When the resulting fry reach fingerling size, they will be released into the Kings River below Pine Flat Dam

PUBLIC ADVISORY GOALS FOR THE UPCOMING YEARS

Continue to implement the Habitat Master Plan

Continue to gather data and study the river and its ecosystem, including the new water quality standards and permanent use of the radio telemetry system to accurately monitor trout movement in the river.

Improve public outreach to develop a wider base of public involvement in order to build greater understanding of the Fisheries Management Program.

The Agreement has a ten year life span.  We will need to build a coalition that will go to Sacramento to lobby for continued funding.

Expand the habitat improvement efforts to the reach below the Fresno Weir.
